Rialto Beach

Rialto Beach

Way way up in the upper left corner of the upper left state is Rialto Beach, where the winds are buffeting and brutal and occasionally carry mountains of seafoam to shore (or even blast clumps of it through the air). Last month I toted a vintage Leica M4 to the shore and when I couldn’t get my hood-less Canon to get a properly exposed photo in the blinding white light, a roll of Porta 400 film was there to save me.

Below: a few film views of Rialto Beach that came through when digital failed me.

Little Si Golden Hour

Sometimes I need to be dragged on a hiking excursion, and sometimes I do the dragging. A few weekends ago, Nathan and I went up Little Si on a whim and timed the summit accidentally and precisely with the first minutes of golden hour. At one point, a passing cloud cast a shadow over nearby Mount Si and created a sunbelt effect across a narrow swath of forest. Incredible payoff for a relatively chill trail.

Swift Reservoir

Somewhere between Seattle and the Mount St. Helens area stretches the sprawling, crisp Swift Reservoir. We stopped just as pinprick rain began to fall, and were greeted by misty hilltops and a family of ducks eager to see if we’d brought food.
